Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the oldest holistic medicine, with a history of more than 2,500 years. TCM includes acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and herbal remedies. This ancient wisdom is now validated by Western science which has discovered that acupuncture points have higher concentrations of micro-vessels near the surface of the skin. Acupuncture is recognized as effective by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization. WHO recommends acupuncture and moxibustion for the treatment of over 40 illnesses.
TCM focuses on resolving causes of illnesses by rebalancing the body’s energy (called “chi”). Approximately 30 to 40 percent of modern drugs have herbal origins. Ephedrine comes from Chinese Ma Huang and treats asthma as well as life-threatening allergic reactions. Herbs contain many active constituents that help balance their overall effect — which tends to make them both safe and powerful.
The ebook Acupuncture and Moxibustion as an Evidence-based Therapy for Cancer shows that acupuncture and moxibustion have been used clinically to treat cancer-related symptoms (e.g. cancer pain, anxiety, depression and insomnia), manage treatment-induced side effects (e.g. hot flashes, nausea and vomiting), and enhance immunity (e.g. blood cell count, lymphocyte and natural killer cell activity). It says that it is the first book to provide comprehensive scientific evidence of the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion intervention for cancer care. The integration of acupuncture with Western medicine in cancer treatment is discussed as well.
