T’ai Chi (or Taiji)

Every morning in parks and on beaches across China, millions of people practice T’ai Chi and the Qi Gong (energy cultivation) exercises from which it evolved. T’ai Chi is a gentle yet powerful practice that supports physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

At New York Acupuncture Healthcare, we honor this tradition through the lineage and expertise of Dr. Kan, whose deep roots in Chinese martial arts continue to inform his holistic approach to healing.

Dr. Kan began studying Chinese martial arts at the age of 12 under the tutelage of several of the most esteemed Grand Masters in China. He is highly skilled in multiple internal martial arts, including T’ai Chi, Bagua, Xingyi, and Yiquan.

In 1991, Dr. Kan earned First Place in the Beijing and National Colleges Wu Shu (Martial Arts) Championships, and Third Place in 1992—competitions akin to the NCAA championships in the United States. His dedication and skill led him to become the national T’ai Chi college champion of China in 1991.

From 2003 onward, Dr. Kan shared his expertise through private and group instruction across New York and New Jersey, with a focus on promoting balance, easing arthritis, and enhancing general health, especially in older adults.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), vital life force energy—chi (or qi)—flows through the body via meridians, following the movement of blood. If blood circulation is hindered, the flow of chi is also disrupted, potentially leading to imbalances and illness.

T’ai Chi and Qi Gong promote the smooth circulation of both blood and chi, supporting the body's natural healing processes. These ancient practices are now supported by modern research, which has shown that acupuncture points—integral to both acupuncture and these movement arts—correspond with areas rich in microcirculation and blood flow.
