T'ai Chi (or Taiji)

Every morning in parks and on beaches across China, millions of people practice T’ai Chi and the chi gong (energy management) exercises from which it was derived. T’ai Chi is a simple, pleasurable, effective form of physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual “health insurance”.

From the age of 12, Dr. Kan studied under several of the most prestigious Grand Masters in the Chinese Martial Arts — highly skilled in many forms including T'ai Chi, Bagua, Xingyi, and Yiquan. Dr. Kan won First Place in 1991 and Third Place in 1992 in the Beijing and National Colleges Wu Shu (Martial Arts) Championships which are similar to NCAA competition.

From 2003 to the present, Dr. Kan has been employed by the Continuing Education Department of Queens College in Queens, NY and Chinese Medicine Healthcare in Princeton, NJ to provide instruction in Tai Chi. The training includes private instruction for advanced students and group instruction concentrating on arthritis, balance difficulties, age-related conditions, and general health.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, our life force energy (called "chi" or "qi") is carried through the body in a complex system of vessels called meridians, and follows the free flow of blood within the body. Meridians conduct chi which is activated by acupuncture or acupressure on acupuncture points. If the movement of blood is restricted, so is the movement of the vital life force energy, thereby causing disharmony in the functioning of the organs.

The physical and esoteric arts of Tai Chi and Qi Gong work to improve the vascular flow of blood to move chi more freely throughout the body. The effect is improved health and immunity, higher energy levels, and enhanced mental and emotional functioning. This ancient wisdom is now validated by Western science which has discovered that acupuncture points have higher concentrations of micro-vessels near the surface of the skin. Acupuncture points are connected to locations in the body where more blood is concentrated.
